Childhood Fears

Posted in People to Watch, crazy things, photography on June 17, 2009 by ramblintadpole

I’m partly posting this for Emily but mostly i’m posting this because they are terrifyingly close to how i feel when i’m sitting at my desk… alone… in the late hours of the night.  eek.  But seriously, cool photographer Joshua Hoffine has a lot more work in this series worth checking out.

A new type of type site

Ellen Lupton (design hero) came to visit PC last week.

She showed us her website Thinking With Type that promotes her book Thinking with Type (which is really on of the best books on typography I’ve ever read).  But the part that interested me most was the section on Crimes against Typeography. The amusing flash games and videos are well worth a visit whether you care about type or not.  Check it out.

wouldn’t life be better if we all lived in photoshop?

Some great photos that really made me think…why didn’t I think of that.

made by Henry Hadlow and Ed Cornish.

Feisty at Five am

Today…well actually in a few minutes I’ll be giving a presentation on form for the infamous “Hanks Class.”  It was suppose to happen a week ago at 6 am so i figured that when it got pushed back it would still be at 6 am. Not so…Instead the class and I had a really interesting bout of YouTubexploration. The lesson was about storytelling and the power and versatility a good story can have. We learned that a story is about an event that results in change. To really nail the point home we turned to the storytelling masters on Sesame Street. These three videos follow the same main character in the same story but applied in different ways that change meaning.

Also we looked at the fantastic storytelling that Craig Frasier uses in his series of short animations that you can check out here.

rough post…crazy times.

Natural History

Posted in People to Watch, spectacles to behold on July 8, 2008 by ramblintadpole

opening at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City on June 28 and running through July 16 Natural History Museum Part 1 is an exhibition of new work by Carlos Ramos. Check out the Corey Helford Gallery Web Site or his site to see more.

Reminiscent of the large scale dioramas painted on the dusty walls of the Natural History Museums of our youth Ramos has a fresh spin for an old concept. He has done illustrations for Cartoon Network, Nickelodean and Disney and worked on shows like Dexter’s Laboratory.

Man Rabbit Design

Just finished my first illustration class of the quarter and I have to say it was outrageous. I’m not allowed to say swamp or use navy blue and I’m going to be building a rocket ship out of garbage for my first assignment. I’m unusually excited.

We had a guest speaker (the instructors son) who came and spoke about his work in the graphic design industry and what it’s like to be color blind. Charlie Burnett is his name and heres the construction page of his portfolio Web site. Don’t judge it by the initial animation…the cool part is the hidden easter egg. Once the illustration has played through click the dot on the I and hopefully you will be as amused as I was. Cool class. Couldn’t find any work of his but heres a spiffy headshot from his acting site. ENJOY!

A promise to my fellow Sag Hags

Posted in People to Watch, escapades, spectacles to behold on April 24, 2008 by ramblintadpole

So i’ve been putting off this post all day. How do I describe the events of yesterdays Sagmiester extravaganza? It needs to be said that he FAR exceeded my expectations in many ways and gave me a whole new light into why he is as popular as he is. Tomorrow, perhaps when it isn’t still so freshly awesome in my mind, I’m going to write a play by play of the seminar and the events that followed and preceded. I will, however, say that what most impressedme about stefan sagmeister (stephan sagmeister…this spelling gets me more hits on google) was that instead of giving his life to design and letting it be something that controls his happiness and his stress level he has managed to meld it into a framework that he uses to maintain an optimistic, thought provoking and adventurous lifestyle.  I even spent WAY to much money on his book…and got it signed. So I’m going to post the link to the books website not because I am promoting it but because it is a really cool Web site that is an extension of the idea behind the book. As to whether you should buy it or not…I think you need to decide for yourself if you are ready to join the ranks of Sag Hags everywhere. Don’t take my work…see for yourself…it will be better that way.

Today is the Stefan day.

So finally the day has arrived. Stefan Sagmeister is only a few hours away and the excitement is building. Honestly, it is sort of like going to a rock concert. Everyone is charging their camera batteries, planning carpools and planning what pair of panties they want to throw up on stage. I’m excited to finally have a chance to witness for myself the “wonderment” that is this design school icon. And seriously, he’s been using his notoriety to have giant, albino, blow-up monkeys produced for the betterment of mankind. Giant monkey’s are a easy way into my heart.

Oh, and if you are interested in some really striking poster designs you should check out The Small Stakes, most people will probably have seen some of the work before but I really appreciate the simplicity and boldness of the work. Here are a few of my favorites. Jason Munn the designer, has a really good skill at storytelling. he can squeeze intricate and dramatic stories into simple minimalistic illustrations. I’m also a huge fan of his use of type. Seems so effortless but I can only imagine the level of work that goes into producing just one of these prints.

Designing beyond human limits

I’ve been reading “thinking with type” by Ellen Lupton. This morning I started the chapter on the history of the grid in graphic design and it’s really sort of facinating…but i doubt most anyone else would be facinated so instead I’m going to talk about Joshua Davis who was mentioned in a caption.

Joshua Davis who was also featured recently on Mac.com. Click here for more on that. The really cool thing about Joshua Davis besides the fact that he is a Flash god is that he has been revolutionizing design visuals through coding. He’s developed these programs that he can input various limitation into that subsequently create artwork that is seemingly impossible. The levels of detail that can be achieved in a single afternoon is incredible. Spend a few minutes looking at the following examples of Joshuas work and imagine being a traditional designer who has to create, colorize and place each of the elements in this work. He sites in the Mac.com article that once he sent a poster to a printer that had 120,000 layers, thats INSANE! My brain is a twitter with the possible applications of this idea. Had I only the mad coding abilities. alas

I’m impressed. Heres his blog to learn more
