Progress Report

I want to start posting the work I do each week…perhaps it will put a fire under my butt to make it impressive.

Couple of projects in the till.

I’m also developing a new system for Plant Markers. I don’t know how many of you are gardeners but the little plastic spikes that provide information on plants in the garden center are rarely informative or easy to use.  They information design is unorganized and nonuniform.  I’m not happy with the form of my spike yet but the visual language is starting to develop.  I’ll post updates as I work on it.

Plant SpikesThe Spicery is also coming back into the picture…Which I’m estatic about. I spent some time tweaking the logo. as seen here.  The logo is suppose to feel sort of like a quality control stamp.  Like it’s not Spicery quality until the very end when the logo is stamped on the package.

Spicery LogoPackaging and Website returning soon.

Lastly, a new project I started sort of on a whim and am now really excited about.  In college i had and art exhibition called QuinkanPixel. The collection looked at my personal interprestation of the history of graphic design. Following and comparing the underlying intentions of aboriginal cave painters to bloggers, social networkers and visual storytellers of today. I’ve been toying with the idea of revisiting this collection now that I’ve had two solid, crazy years of school under my belt and see where it takes me.

The peice I started this week will have many outlets.  I see it as the visual language of the show. I see the beginings of a really great interactive site, flash videos, posters, books..etc.

What you see here is in reality the size of a pencil eraser. I start with a central statement…still working on that and build upon it with motifs from around the world, quote and ideas that I believe have built the foundation of design as we know it today.  Whats great about the project is that it is as unlinear as I need it to be. I can continue adding layers forever and continue adding layers of complexity as I grow and learn. The piece will initially be an illustration/motion peice…but I’d like to take it further. We’ll see.

The strangeness of art school.

This quarter I’m in an illustration for designers class. It’s like being back in Art school for many reason. the class structure is delightfully loose. Sometimes we’ll start with some extremely high paced, high stress, artistic situations or games that we will then critique. We’ve used a basket of scarves to design a new line of fashions, we’ve had story time were we sat in a circle and had to act like 8 year olds while the teacher read to use her favorite illustrated children’s books. The teacher also gives painting tutorials and has introduced some fun painting tricks that I’d never seen before.  I’ve learned a lot in a very short time.  I’m sure there will be more work to post but for now I wanted to show you the results of the first assignment.

Assignment 1:

Build a rocket ship out of garbage.

it must be made completely out of recycled materials, it must be painted, it must be hanging on the ugliest hanger you can find, it must have stars, it must have a flame, it must have the planet saturn, it must have at least one window…there were a few more rules but I’ve forgotten them. It was crazy and it took a lot more time than i’d like to admit

heres what I made…excuse the photography.

If I could have figured out how to photograph it I would have but mine also lit up from the inside…which was a cooler effect than I’d anticipated.

I’m doing some spice packaging on which …for the first time ever…I’ll be performing a delicate silk screening. Scary eh…not so. With “PhotoEz” silk screening can be both fun and profitable. Heres hoping that a good review will get me a discount on this pricey item…at least it’s cheaper than INT’s. Anyways, in the spirit of sharing heres what I know.

What is PhotoEZ?

PhotoEZ is a user-friendly product for creating custom silk-screen stencils to use on fabric, metal, wood, paper, glass, ceramic… the list is endless. PhotoEZ is a unique material made from fine silkscreen mesh coated with light sensitive water-soluble polymer. It uses black and white images on plain white paper, sunlight and tap water to develop.

Take your basic silk screen, remove the metal or wooden frame, do away with all those nasty chemicals and what do you end up with? PhotoEZ, a simple yet innovative product for creating custom screen printing stencils without cutting. And because it’s based on the old tried and true method of screen printing and photography, it’s much more versatile then plastic stencils

The other day i was working on a project for Message and Content and I stumbled across a really interesting effect. I’ve attached the file below so see if it works for you. Tilt your laptop upwards and look at the picture…does it reveal a scene…now tilt your screen downwards…does it reveal another picture? I’m fairly sure this will only work on certain laptop screens…It’s freaking cool on my powerbook. totally accidental..but totally interesting.
