Sita Sings the Blues

Posted in Places to Go, Things to ruminate, animation, crazy things, illustration, spectacles to behold, technical prowess on June 28, 2009 by ramblintadpole

I do a lot of searching.  On a day to day basis i troll the internet for inspiration and new ideas.  It’s rare that I find something as awe-inspiring and wonderful as what i found today.  Sita Sings the Blues is an animated retelling of the story of the Indian epic, The Ramayana. The story is woven together with scenes from a parallel contemporary story about a broken heart. All this and it’s a musical too…set to the musical numbers of 1920’s jazz vocalist Annette Hanshaw.

I’ve always been a myth lover but this takes the cake.  It’s not only beautifully animated but the story is wonderful too.  The film can be seen streaming free at Reel 13 but you should also check out sitasingstheblues.com.  One of the more amazing aspects of this film is that it has been released as Creative Commons.  Nina the animator gives her work freely to the world to enjoy.  It’s a great concept and well worth a read.

The film is a little over an hour but completely worth it.  If you get a chance to watch it i’d love to know what you think.  Take some time today to watch this incredible film.  You won’t regret it.  Enjoy

What I find so strange about the following is that the were made about 170 years ago.  These woodblock prints of Racoon Dogs (Tanuki) were produced by Utagawa Kuniyoshi in the 1840’s.  It’s a long series that demonstrates all the neat things the Tanuki could do with their “voluntarily enlarged scrotums.”

retail signage and boating

weightlifting and carp clobbering

scaring the crap out of other people… and seine fishing

keeping out of the sun for fortune telling and more retail signage

making soup and something called a boy festival…

archery practice and turtle espionage

net fishing and moving

moving

fishing some more and keeping dry in a sudden storm

Childhood Fears

I’m partly posting this for Emily but mostly i’m posting this because they are terrifyingly close to how i feel when i’m sitting at my desk… alone… in the late hours of the night.  eek.  But seriously, cool photographer Joshua Hoffine has a lot more work in this series worth checking out.

Pixelnotes Wallpaper

Posted in crazy things on January 10, 2009 by ramblintadpole

What a great idea. Pixelnotes sells this 4 ply wallpaper that has been perforated into a grid pattern. Each layer of the wallpaper is a slightly darker grey and backed with a adhesive similar to a Sticky Note. You can jot a quick note on the wall and peel it off and slowly your wall becomes a peice of artwork that reflects the way you use it. Perhaps not the most practical of home furnishings but a interesting idea all the same.

Last night I went to see the Dolly Parton concert at Chastain Park.  Being a student i had little choice but to get the cheapest tickets.  I migh thave been closer if I’d just stayed at home…and dryer too…as it was raining.  Luckily Domenic remembered to bring his “opera glass” which were really just binoculars.  We were bobbing away to the small blond blob in the misty distance when this man approached Monica and asked her if she liked Dolly Parton…she, of course, said yes.  He told us that he has season tickets at Chastain Park and that usually his wife and some friends or family would come with him to the concerts but that night he was by himself and he wanted to know if we wanted to sit a little closer.  We were estatic…so he handed us three tickets and we started to follow him down the stairs. I was thinking we’d be lucky to get into the ampitheatre and away from the grass seating around the rim were the tickets we’d purchased had allocated us…but we just kept walking.  We passed the stadium seating…we passed the tables and we kept walking.  Thats when i looked at my ticket…Row A seat 2.  Best seats i could have imagined.  The concert was a lot of fun and Dolly Parton is a hoot.  I never got to ask the name of the man who gave us the tickets but I wanted to send my thank you out into the world on the off chance that he might see it.  He managed to make 3 stressed out and wet students very happy.

So in honor of the mystery man heres a video clip of my favorite Dolly Parton song…9 to 5

For my Kwi

Saw this and thought of Kwi.  I wonder if I’d seen this in the store if I’d buy it…and then if I’d bought it…could I eat it.  Just too weird.  Kinda cool packaging though.

Design O’Blog has a great post that brings to light the horrifying results of not requiring a license to operate photoshop. Check out their site and thanks them for making this rare gem of creepy photoshoped squirrels available to the world. So far it’s been the highlight of my morning.

I’m doing some spice packaging on which …for the first time ever…I’ll be performing a delicate silk screening. Scary eh…not so. With “PhotoEz” silk screening can be both fun and profitable. Heres hoping that a good review will get me a discount on this pricey item…at least it’s cheaper than INT’s. Anyways, in the spirit of sharing heres what I know.

What is PhotoEZ?

PhotoEZ is a user-friendly product for creating custom silk-screen stencils to use on fabric, metal, wood, paper, glass, ceramic… the list is endless. PhotoEZ is a unique material made from fine silkscreen mesh coated with light sensitive water-soluble polymer. It uses black and white images on plain white paper, sunlight and tap water to develop.

Take your basic silk screen, remove the metal or wooden frame, do away with all those nasty chemicals and what do you end up with? PhotoEZ, a simple yet innovative product for creating custom screen printing stencils without cutting. And because it’s based on the old tried and true method of screen printing and photography, it’s much more versatile then plastic stencils

Gosh it’s been a great day for finding cool stuff to post. The organization Improv Everywhere, who is notorious for creating public spectacles in unexpected New York locales, hired a troupe of twins to create the following performance in the subway.  No sure how they were allowed to film it but it is still really cool.

If you find yourself with a few minutes to waste check out their Web site and check out their other missadventures. You won’t be disappointed.
